Pasadena - Rose Parade comes off without a hitch
The 125th Rose Parade made its way along Colorado Boulevard on Wednesday in Pasadena, California. The New Year’s Day parade featured 48 floral floats, 20 marching bands and equestrian units.
Los Angeles Dodgers longtime broadcaster Vin Scully, the parade’s grand marshal, kicked off the show after six F-16s from the US Air Force’s Thunderbirds roared overhead. “Instead of me throwing out the first pitch, let’s start the parade,” said Scully, who tossed the kickoff coin at the Rose Bowl match between Stanford and Michigan State.
Despite the chilly temperatures, many people camped out overnight to have a good view of the two-hour long morning spectacle. Beside the parade’s traditional entertainment and mixture of cultural styles, this year’s Rose Parade detoured into debates over same-sex marriages and captive killer whales.
A heavy police presence ringed this year’s revelry in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.
