Photo show brings Qing, Republican eras into view
MORE than 300 photos, taken during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to the Republic of China era, are currently on display in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Many of the works now being displayed have rarely been put on public view. These pictures, most of which were taken by Chinese photographers, offer a kaleidoscopic view of history, culture, the varied modes of life as well as the social and political transformations which occurred this tumultuous period.
A special area of the exhibition includes a selection of portraits of Fu Yi (1906-67), the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty; as well as the ambitious Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908).
Photos also capture efforts made by China in the late Qing to beef up its military and industrial force. Other images offer a glimpse into imperial life at the Summer Palace.
The exhibition runs through July 17 in the hall near Shenwu Gate.
