Quilts warm up creativity

Creativity splashes at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center when quilt designers and production companies gather at this year’s International Quilt Festival.

Melissa Sobotka, a former graphics designer, won the Handi Quilter Best of Show award of US$10,000 for her work titled “Chihuly’s Gondola.”

Inspired by Dale Chihuly, a glass sculpture master, Sobotka created a quilt featuring a small gondola loaded with chromatic glass balls.

A total of US$100,000 is awarded to talented quilt designers and makers during the event.

About 60,000 people are expected to attend the four-day quilt festival, which ends today.London
