ST Petersburg - 'Swan Lake' in 3D
IN a first for ballet, Russia's legendary Mariinsky theater projects every pirouette of its classic "Swan Lake" in 3D to cinema audiences around the world Thursday.
As the venerated troupe performs Tchaikovsky's ballet on stage in St Petersburg, 3D cameras capture their moves and the images are transmitted into 1,200 cinemas in 50 countries.
Among those working on the hi-tech screening is a company owned by James Cameron, director of high-grossing 3D film drama "Avatar."
"It's the first time in the history of ballet that it has been presented like this," theater spokeswoman Oksana Tokranova said, adding that the quality of 3D screening would be comparable to that of cinema blockbusters.
