Serious thoughts on the future of Austria
CHANGES are never easy. However, “there is no free lunch — no perpetual annuity,” says Hannes Androsch, former Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance of Austria, at the launch of his Chinese edition of the book “The End of Complacency: 7 Views on the Future of Austria” on Thursday in Shanghai.
Austria has since 1945 boasted an incredible success story and has survived the crisis better than most other countries. But such a success story cannot be assumed to continue automatically. Complacency, a reluctance to reform, and a tardiness in increasing economic performance threaten to send the country into decline, Androsch says.
He argues that reforms still need to be initiated “from above,” and education must be adapted to life in the digital revolution. Building upon a varied and multi-facetted past, the seven views Androsch presented offer valuable suggestions and in-depth thought on the future of the country.
