Shanghai - Battle for tiara
SHANGHAI beauties began battling it out on Tuesday, with dreams of ultimately becoming Miss World. Several hundred young women are vying for the Miss Shanghai tiara and an opportunity to compete in the national finals. The Shanghai final will be held on August 25.
First held in 1951 in Britain, Miss World is recognized as one of the great pageants in the world.
Organizers say it aims to promote "beauty with a purpose" - encouraging women to be independent and confident, and discover role models for today's women.
In 2007, Chinese model Zhang Zilin became the first Chinese Miss World.
The current Miss World is also from China, Heilongjiang Province native Yu Wenxia. Yu will also appear in Shanghai as a special guest to cheer on city competitors.
