Shanghai - ‘Misdemeanors’ sure to create controversy

“Bharti Kher: Misdemeanors,” a solo exhibition created by contemporary painter and sculptor Bharti Kher, is on display at Rockbund Art Museum. The exhibition examines tropes, ideas, and bodies of work that constitute the mainstay of Kher’s body of work, including the interlocking relationships between man and the animal kingdom and the attendant notions of hybridity, transmogrification and ethics.

Entering the museum, one sees “Misdemeanors,” a work which shares the same name as the exhibition. Glaring at the audience, this ferocious, terrifying hyena is made out of fibreglass; yet a fur of unknown origin from another animal covers its back. Images of animals and hybrid creatures are frequently recurring themes in Kher’s works, engendering all kinds of contradictory clashes.

Another work titled “Self Portrait” reminds one of classical Western portraiture. Kher’s face has turned into that of a baboon. Hybrids deals with the multiple identities women in modern society carry with them: They are surrounded by children, housework, and food preparation, and yet must possess this animalistic power of survival in order to hold their ground in the struggle within the male-dominated societies of South Asia. They seem to have found a certain balance in their multiple identities and are identified by Kher as “urban goddesses.”

Bharti Kher was born in London in 1969 and studied at Middlesex and Newcastle polytechnics. Her works can be found in the collections of the Burger Collection, Hong Kong; Tate Modern, London; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi, and François Pinault Collection, Paris, amongst others.

The exhibition has been curated by Sandhini Poddar, the Mumbai-based art historian and adjunct curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
