Shanghai - Photo retrospective

A solo exhibition by Zhu Zhendong is taking place at Fangcaodi Gallery on No. 140 Tianlin Road.

The exhibition is a retrospective show for the 64-year-old photographer. Zhu still recalls his first camera — a “Seagull” 120 camera he bought at age 25. He said he was so in love with photography he did all the work to produce black-and-white prints himself.

In today’s digital age, Zhu said it seems that “Everybody is a National Geographic photographer,” especially when using a camera like his Nikon D35. He lamented that the camera is so good that he feels that, “I lived my 59 years on the path of photography in vain.”

Zhu has traveled to 44 countries in the past several decades, including such areas as the Black Sea, the Amazon River and Iguazu Falls. Visitors will see his pictures of the Tokyo Bay sunset, the Scottish landscape, the Tai Nan night markets and Prague Blues Square.

For Zhu, the charm of photography lies in capturing the perfect light and shade after hours, days or even weeks of waiting. “I am still waiting, waiting for the changing light, waiting for the person I admire in my lens,” he said.
