Shanghai - Spotlight on French art of the 1930s

A MAJOR exhibition of modern French art from the 1930s, when France was the dynamic heart of the Western art world, is underway at the China Art Museum through March 16.

The spectacular exhibition features 103 works of painting, sculpture and other genre from the Boulogne-Billiancourt 1930s Art Museum, covering changing artistic trends of the first half of the 20th century. Works include “Lumiere d’hiver” by Maurice Joron and “La Partie de Pêche” by Jean Despujols.

The exhibition tries to recreate the colorful year 1930, when strolled through galleries and salons, enjoying the fascinations of every artistic style.

The 1930s in Europe was a period of tension in which fresh art appeared; there was renewed interest in classical culture combined with technology and modernism. Art captured both hopes and anxieties of people living in the shadow of looming war.

French art of the 1930s, with its changing styles and forms, reflects the transition and changes in modern art and greatly influenced modern Chinese art.

The vast China Art Museum in the former China National Pavilion of the World Expo Shanghai 2010 features major exhibitions that officials hope will help put Shanghai on the world art map.
