Slovakian glassware on display
Slovakian glass ranks at or near the top of glassware made around the world.
But there aren’t too many opportunities in the city to appreciate glassware art, especially Slovakian contemporary glass.
However, an exhibition, “iGlass 2013,” is being held with nearly 26 sets of exclusive glass sculptures from Slovakia with participating artists belonging to the top of the European glass art scene, including big names such as Vaclav Cigler, Zora Palova and Stepan Pala, Milos Balgavy and Oliver Lesos.
The exhibition runs through Tuesday at Levant Art on Yuyao Road, then goes to a branch of Levant Art at 107 Huqiu Rd from November 11 to December 25.
As a biennial event, this is the third edition of “iGlass” organized by Levant Art and Gallery Nova.
According to Bert van Loo, the Dutch curator of the exhibition, “The duality of glass is particularly appealing to me. Glass is soft and sensual when it’s hot. Once cooled, it’s hard and sharp. At the same time, it’s vulnerable and fragile.”
In his eyes, Slovak glass artists are particularly valued not only for their creativity, but also for the high-quality and a wide range of applicability of their works — in free art as well as in architectural and design uses.Houston
