Sun, sea, sand ... sculptures
More than 100 sculptures by artists from 14 countries dotted Bondi Beach in Sydney for the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition turns the picturesque Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk into a creative scultpure park.
Stunning and thought-provoking art pieces are staged against Sydney’s brilliant sunshine and turquoise sea water. Chinese artist Qian Shihua showcases a 2-meter-high red sculpture of a boy blowing bubblegum. A pair of hands are featured in Simon McGrath’s work “Virtually Melted,” holding a phone camera taking a picture of an iceberg. David McCracken presents sculpture “Diminish and Ascend,” in which a Tower-of-Babel like ladder is displayed, as if connecting the land and the heaven.
Artist Stephen King from New South Wales was awarded AU$60,000 (US$56,622) for his work “Fallout.”
“It’s great that Stephen has received the Macquarie Group Sculpture Prize. He’s been so close to winning the main prize at Sculpture by the Sea on a number of occasions with some great works. This year the bridesmaid has finally become the bride,” said David Handley, founding director of the event.
The exhibition runs through 10 November.shanghai
