Sydney - Big is beautiful
EIGHTEEN larger than life sculptures of plump women greeted tourists Tuesday at The Rocks, Sydney, Australia. Created by Chinese sculptor Xu Hongfei, the bronze pieces facing the landmark Sydney Opera House opened Xu's world tour.
The 50-year-old artist goes against cultural ideals of slimness, and finds inspiration and beauty in larger women. Some of Xu's chubby ladies are energetic and vigorous, riding a bicycle against the wind, playing tennis or surfing; others are relaxed and refined.
Xu says that his Chubby Women collection is an "alternative" expression of his understanding of life and art. "Plump women are a better fit for sculpture. It is impulsive when seeing chubby women playing, which also brings happiness and humor," the artist once said.
Themed "Foreshore Frolics," the sculpture exhibition runs through June 26 in Sydney Harbor.
