Young artists light way at ‘Visions’ exhibit

SOME of the most exciting, emerging creative artists are showing their creations inspired by traditional crafts, materials and cultures at Lane Crawford on Huaihai Road M. until October 20.
The department store is collaborating with Swarovski to present the “Visions from a New Generation” exhibition on the occasion of Lane Crawford’s 165th anniversary. Each of the pieces on show incorporates Swarovski crystal.
“In preparation for this collaboration we have handpicked some of the finalists from our call-out initiative that we believe will become future visionaries. They are emerging talent in China coming from fashion, design and art with a majority of them currently residing in China and foreseeing the country as part of their future growth,” said Joanna Gunn, chief brand officer of Lane Crawford.
“Each of them has pushed boundaries to create a piece that transports us forward into the next 165 years as we are very excited by the growth of fashion and lifestyle talent coming from China and a new interesting trend that we are seeing is that Chinese consumers are becoming increasingly supportive of home-grown talent,” she added.
Some of the highlight works on display include the “Light Flower” by Sky Yutaka, a Hong Kong-based architecture design studio. It draws inspiration from paper-cutting. By challenging a local paper craft master to reinterpret traditional techniques and incorporate finely cut Swarovski crystals, the studio has produced an innovative work that responds to movement in its immediate environment to create dynamic and continually changing lighting effects.
“We support these brands by investing through wholesale relationships: we buy their merchandise and invest in their creations. When we believe in the creative direction of the brand and its relevance to this market, we commit to it,” Gunn said.
