‘2 Broke Girls’ cook seeking perfect recipe for success in China

Best-known as Oleg, the lecherous Ukrainian cook in CBS’s hit comedy “2 Broke Girls,” Jonathan Kite is visiting and performing in China this week for the first time.

Playing three nights at The Pearl, Kite promises his fans in China a show featuring some of his 100 plus celebrity impressions, side-splitting stories of Hollywood’s greatest and worst and an inside peek into “2 Broke Girls.”

“I’ve longed to visit China and meet my fans here,” Kite told Shanghai Daily. “I’m so glad to be here and I want to thank all my fans for waiting and for their warm welcome.”

Kite believes there are big opportunities for him in China.

“I like the feeling of exploring the world, especially China. There’s a huge untapped market to develop,” he said. “And I’m so excited to be able to interact with my fans in Shanghai.”

Kite is also renowned for his celebrity impersonations, including takes on Barack Obama, Tom Hanks, Seth Rogen, Mark Wahlberg, Liam Neeson and Nicolas Cage.

“For me, imitating others is a fun trick — a sort of nice game. And I can make money from it,” said Kite.

And to demonstrate his mimicry skills, Kite performed his impression of Obama exclusively for Shanghai Daily.

He says it’s vital in his work to keep learning and progressing — whether over the years on “2 Broke Girls” or discovering what Chinese find funny.

“I am constantly trying to learn what it takes to be successful. You have to be open-minded and learn from the best,” he explained.

“And that is part of the reason why I am here in Shanghai, to learn what makes Chinese people laugh.”

Kite speaks of his admiration for acting and martial arts legend Jackie Chan. “I want to learn what makes him so successful and learn the best way to entertain Chinese fans.”

Kite says that Shanghai has made a big impression on him. “My first impression of Shanghai is that it’s such a huge metropolis, bigger than any city I’ve been to in America and Europe, and with a really high population density.”

“I love Shanghai and I really enjoy food here,” he added.

In addition to his role as Oleg Golishevsky, Kite’s other television work include parts in “American Dad!,” “Raising Hope,” “Kickin’ It,” “The Life & Times of Tim,” and “Wizards of Waverly Place,” as well as commercials for AT&T and Muscle Milk.

Of “2 Broke Girls,” he promises Shanghai fans some behind-the-scenes stories from the hit comedy set in a Brooklyn diner.

“If you want to know secret stories, don’t miss my shows at The Pearl,” he said.

This is sure to find favor with Kite’s Shanghai fans as “2 Broke Girls,” which is on its fifth season in the United States, is hugely popular in China.

Season 4 attracted 1.7 billion views across China’s top online platforms, more than 300,000 discussions online and 4.1 billion hash tag views.
