A week of animated fun at the theaters

FOR animation fans, festivals offer a chance to catch up with the latest animation and cartoon trends and to watch some of the industry’s latest works. China Internaitonal Cartoon and Animation Festival’s International Animation Film Week will bring dozens of animation films to four cinemas in the city.

The selection includes works that won the festival’s Golden Monkey King Award, recent animation blockbusters from China and abroad and a series of short animations brought by delegates from other international animation festivals.

We list some films to be screened in the International Animation Week.

“CUG, Kings of Heroes”

Chinese with English subtitles

The all-powerful Monkey King once roamed freely between Heaven and Earth, but after angering the Gods, he was imprisoned in an ice cage deep inside a mountain. Five hundred years later, monsters attack a small village and a child flees to the mountains. Unknowingly, the child releases the Monkey King from his curse. With help and encouragement from this special child, the Monkey King saves the village from the evil monsters.

“A Cat in Paris”

French with Chinese subtitles

This 2010 French animated adventure/crime film by the French animation studio Folimage tells the story of a young Parisian girl whose cat leads her to unravel a thrilling mystery over the course of a single evening. The film was directed by Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

“The King and the Mockingbird”

French with Chinese subtitles

“The King and the Mockingbird” is a 1980 traditionally animated feature film directed by Paul Grimault and is today regarded as a masterpiece of French animation. The huge kingdom of Takicardia is ruled by a heartless king who is fond of hunting, but is unfortunately cross-eyed. Occasionally the king does hit his target, notably the wife of a bird, known only as “l’Oiseau.”

“One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes”

Chinese with English subtitles

“One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes” is a compilation of several parodies of classic Chinese animations and comics such as “Prince Nezha’s Triumph Against Dragon King” and “Calabash Brothers,” famous Japanese animations and comics like “Detective Conan” and “Ultraman,” and even Western fairy tales “Pinocchio” and “Snow White,” as well as some original mini-series. The chapters have no specific relationship between each other.

“Yellowbird”

French with Chinese subtitles

In this 3D stereoscopic CG-animated film, Darius, the leader of a flock of birds, is wounded just before it is time for the birds to migrate to Africa. Darius has to pass information about the migration route on to the first bird he encounters, which happens to be Yellowbird, who is excited about the challenge, but has very little life experience.

“The Legend of Qin”

Chinese with English subtitles

This 2014 Chinese animated fantasy adventure written and directed by Shen Leping and created by “Qin’s Moon” TV series features the quest of an unlikely quartet. A boy, the kingdom’s greatest warrior, the descendent of a reviled war criminal and a descendent of the Divine Dragon cross the desert to find the hidden kingdom of Loulan to prevent Emperor Qin from awakening an ancient weapon that will return China to war.

“Valley of the Lost Ants”

This French-Belgian animated film, co-written and directed by Hélène Giraud and Thomas Szabo, relies on music instead of spoken dialogues. The film shares the same creative universe as the Minuscule series also created by Hélène Giraud and Thomas Szabo, which won the César Award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 40th César Awards.

“Green Days: Dinosaur and I”

Korean with Chinese subtitles

This 2011 South Korean animated film, which was drawn with pencils, was created by 14 animators using 100,000-plus sheets over a period of 11 years. Set in a 1970s rural town, it is a nostalgic coming-of-age story about a high-school girl who struggles to find meaning in her existence and learns to confront her biggest fears, while also falling in love for the first time.

“Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf — Amazing Pleasant Goat”

Chinese with English subtitles

“Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf,” a popular Chinese animated television series, releases a film every New Year. This one is its seventh film. The show is about a group of goats living on a green pasture and a clumsy wolf who wants to eat them.
