Best places to sit in the saddle of a horse

WITH the 2016 Longines Global Champions Tour Shanghai Grand Prix just around the corner, Shanghai’s experiencing a boom in equestrian culture. If you’re looking to try equestrian sports yourself or if you are looking for a family weekend activity, Shanghai Daily has found the right place for you.

Qingqing Horse Equestrian Club

If you just started being interested in equestrian sports, Qingqing may be right up your alley. It is the club closest to the city center and places a heavy emphasis on safety — the coach to student ratio is 1:1, and there are no more than 10 students per 45-minute lesson. While the club is ideal for novices, they also offer lessons for students of all skill-levels. The ranch also offers facilities for overnight stays and has a coffee shop.

Jialiang Equestrian Club

The club, a member of the China National Equestrian Association, is another option for both serious and leisure riders. The club covers a large area in the south-eastern part of Pudong, which includes a 500-meter-long sand track and a jumping court. They have around 30 well-trained horses, experienced coaches and staff, and a long list of safety protocols followed on their grounds to ensure their guests have a secure and enjoyable riding experience. They also breed and sell their own horses. If all that isn’t enough, Jialiang is also home to a K-9 kennel, where they breed, train, and board pure-breed dogs and sell puppies.

Meadowbrook Equestrian and Rural Activity Center

At Meadowbrook, it’s all about the horses — the club caters to all their animals’ needs and even breeds its own horses and ponies. The internationally accredited center currently has more than 70 animals (50+ horses and 20+ ponies), which are used in lessons for riders of all skill levels, as well as in various non-riding activities, such as stable tours and farming lessons. Guests praise the center for feeling like a second home; indeed, the center has camping and barbecue facilities for family-oriented activities.

Songseng Equestrian Club

The expansive stables of the Songseng Equestrian Club occupy 100,000 square meters of Shanghai’s Fengxian District. This equestrian club boasts a full complement of equestrian facilities, including both indoor and outdoor dressage courses, horse-breaking courses, speed tracks, and an international standard hurdle arena, and 90 thoroughbred horses. There’s also a restaurant and villas for overnight stays.

Chenshan Horse Riding Club

Chenshan is another club offering riding courses for students at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. They have three breeds of horses: English Thoroughbred, Arabian and Mongolian horses on the 26,000-square-meter area the club encompasses.

Price: 188 yuan a ride, 228 yuan on holidays. A membership costs 3,800 yuan for one person (22 courses) 6,800 yuan for a couple (40 courses) and 9,800 yuan for a family (70 courses).

Sun Island Horse Riding Farm

Sun Island features the widest variety of horses, with five different breeds, amounting to around 60 animals: Dutch Warmblood, English Thoroughbred, German Holsteiner, Yili horses, and Mongolian horses. The farm also has the longest sand track in Shanghai, which stretches some 600 meters. Sun Island Resort also includes Mahota Farm, where guests can learn how to grow and pick vegetables.
