Cajun crab comes to the city

CRAB Village, the newly opened American-style seafood restaurant on Jumen Road, might be the first of its kind in Shanghai, even in China, bringing typical Cajun-style food from the US state of Louisiana.

The restaurant is in a bright and happy environment for dining with wooden pillars, pirate ships and a doodle wall.

"We welcome our customers to doodle on the wall, drawing or writing something interesting," says Ou Deming, marketing manager of Crab Village. "This makes the eating environment casual and full of fun, and especially attractive to children."

There is also seating outside which is very much appreciated on sunny days. "Just imagine eating fresh seafood and enjoying the sunshine at the same time," adds Ou.

Alaskan King Crab Legs are the star dish at the restaurant. The XL-size usually weighs 1.5 kilograms and the medium half that.

"We use the top king crab - Red King Crab, and this huge size is even hard to find in the United States," says Ou.

The crab is cooked by boiling in the typical Cajun style that is traditional and popular in the south of the US. This cuisine style could be described as rustic - locally available ingredients predominate and preparation is simple.

Their menu's highlights are attractive seafood dishes including South American lobster, Boston lobster, Dungeness crab, shrimp, clams, green mussels and oysters.

Eighty percent of the seafood ingredients are imported from the US.

Ou says that they use the freshest seafood which is directly cooked with sea water in the US and transferred to Shanghai.

"I guarantee that the food can be still fresh and tasty in two or three days after you take it home," he adds proudly.

The customers can choose a seasoning from original Cajun, lemon pepper or garlic butter. They can also choose from four levels of spiciness.

"This seafood restaurant in McDonald's style caught my eye on its grand opening day," says Chen Xi, a 28-year-old Shanghainese who studies in San Francisco. "The food ingredients are very fresh, the same as what I have eaten at the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Yummy tastes with a simple cooking way!"

As a regular customer, Chen also recommends some other dishes which may be a surprise, such as fried chicken, shrimp, calamari and onion rings.

"Those snacks are also fried in Cajun style with secret seasonings," he says.

The baked wheat bread is the perfect accompaniment to the cocktail sauce specially made with the flavors imported from the US.

Another interesting feature of Crab Village is that knives and forks become redundant as all foods are eaten with hands.

"Eating seafood with your hands is the typically casual way that local people in the south of the US do it," says Ou.

And waiting staff are at hand with pincettes to help open some hard foods such as oysters.

Opened two months ago, Crab Village is planning to expand as a chain. The second one will be opened next month on Hongmei Road in Hongqiao area.

Compared with the current Jumen Road branch with a seating capacity of 68 inside and eight outside, the Hongmei Road restaurant will be much bigger to seat more customers.

Crab Village is also a good place for sports fans. Tagged as a sport bar as well, the TVs hanging in the restaurant broadcast live sports games.

Their opening times are flexible to accommodate the live screening of important sports competitions.

Very soon, a live band will begin a residency at the restaurant and every weekend afternoon and weekday evening after 8pm, a vocalist and a keyboardist from the Philippines will perform.
