Check out Zhabei for some marvellous museums

Zhabei District may not top the list of places to go in Shanghai, but it does have some interesting museums.

Train buffs will likely enjoy perusing Shanghai Railway Museum while those who enjoy going back in time may want to check out a display of dinosaur fossils dating back more than 100 million years.

• Shanghai Railway Museum

It was built on the site of the former Shanghai North Railway Station, or old north station (lao bei zhan), and opened in 2004.

The museum features British-style architecture, and the main hall covers an exhibit area of 1,000 square meters. There is also an outdoor exhibition of 1,300 square meters.

Pictures, historical books and artifacts provide details on the evolution of trains and the railway industry’s development.

One of the highlights is the steam locomotive KD7-64, which was made in the United States in 1946. The locomotive was donated, in 1947, to China by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to help the economy recover.
