COUPLES with interest in donating or storing their newborn baby’s umbilical cord blood can consult maternity doctors and staff from the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank at the hospitals. The bank has a 24-hour hotline, 400-675-5599.
Consultants who speak English are available.
Each cord blood sample is tested for quantity, cell counts and pathogenic organisms like infectious diseases including AIDS/HIV, hepatitis B and C.
The mother’s prenatal tests and medical history are also examined before deciding whether the sample can be stored. Samples will be kept in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of minus 196 degrees Celsius.
