Cool couture in the community
GUBEI, to many people, boasts only high-end residential buildings, clutches of restaurants, DVD shops and spa treatment salons. However, as we strolled around Carrefour Gubei, the landmark building in this happening area, on a sunny afternoon, we did spot quite a few fashionably dressed people.
William:
Canadian-Chinese William describes his personal style as a mix of "Joyce and I.T." style, since he only goes shopping in Joyce and I.T., two high-end, multi-branded boutiques in Shanghai. The 20-year-old's favorite designer is Alexander McQueen. Almost all the accessories he was wearing, including the necklace, the skull bracelet and the skull scarf are from the British fashion house. His vest, designed by John Galliano, is also quite interesting, featuring black lace details on the back.
Mark:
Mark, who's been in town for only five months, says that he is always dressed up in an "elegant, Parisian" way. The French stylist loves to have his clothes and shoes custom made. The velvet suit he was wearing, for example, was custom-made in a tailor shop in Shiliupu Fabric Market on Dongmen Road, which is also one of his favorite haunts in the city.
We also met two young female office workers in Gubei when Kiko was on her way to a coffee shop to meet her friends, and Lisa was ready for some working out in a nearby gym.
Kiko
Like most young Shanghai women, Kiko prefers to dress up in a "casual chic" way. She says that she is obsessed with denim. She buys two to three pairs of jeans every season. The pair she was wearing is from Levi's, her favorite denim brand. According to her, it is the new color of the season, and she likes the lightly washed effect which carries a vintage feel. She also collects classic bags from fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel - just like most young Shanghai ladies!
Lisa
Lisa has a very interesting style. On one hand, the Shanghai local says that she enjoys buying items from trendsetting, cutting-edge fashion houses, especially pieces from local designer boutiques such as Seven Days in Xintiandi Style and Another in Jiuguang City Plaza. On the other hand, she was wearing a gold Tiffany key pendant studded with glittering diamonds, and a gold Cartier Love bangle (both show very expensive taste). Her favorite piece on her that day were the draped pants in bold red, which lighten up her mood as the spring is coming. She told us that it is actually from the latest men's collection in Seven Days, but who cares?
