Cultural activities build community at residences

Providing chances for residents to learn traditional Chinese culture and take part in cultural activities is an advantage for many serviced residence operations in Shanghai.

Such group activities allow guests to get to know each other and the residence staff, serviced apartment managers said.

Both Beatrice Wong, general manager with Modena Putuo, and Jimmy Yu, general manager with Lanson Place Jinqiao Serviced Residences, agreed that the “serviced apartments can offer a sense of home for the guests, compared with other lodging like hotels.”

Modena Putuo said it invites residents to join activities held on Chinese and Western festival days. A barbecue was held at the residence, for example, for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

Modena management helps get residents involved in volunteer work and a domestic skills club so they can share their experiences.

Lanson Place Jinqiao invited residents to enjoy mooncakes made by ayi, or housekeepers, at the residences for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and also sponsored a barbecue for families.

For other traditional festivals like Chinese Lunar New Year, cultural offerings include activities like lion and dragon dances, said Jimmy Yu.

Long-stay guests at Lanson Place Jinqiao said they take great delight in joining cooking classes to make Chinese dumplings during the festivals.

Shanghai Centre said activities related to Chinese traditional culture are "a great experience for customers."

One of the highlights is the annual dragon boat race held in the fall in suburban Qingpu District. Shanghai Centre organized five teams, including serviced apartment residents and staff workers, to join the traditional competition last year. Two of them made it to the 300-meter race finals in the small-dragon-boat match.

For this year's race, Shanghai Centre said six teams applied to participate. Around the city, there will be 100 teams from different corporations joining the October competition.

Shanghai Centre said it also offers programs in literature and art.

Kerry Parkside Residence said it plans regular Chinese traditional activities like painting, Chinese paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy class once every two months.
