Cycle races to bring tourists in their wake

A tranquil scene of waves breaking gently at the mouth of Yangtze River and water birds padding about among reeds is set for colorful addition later this month as streams of cyclists zoom across Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge and race on Chongming Island.

The UCI Women Road World Cup 2012 takes place on May 13, preceded by the Tour of Chongming Island 2012 between May 9 and 11.

The women's World Cup race will follow a different route this year.

The 120.4-kilometer event will start at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Pudong - the first time the route has included stretches downtown - and pass through the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge before finishing in Chongming's Chengqiao Town.

Eighteen teams, including professional and national teams, will compete, as the athletes prepare for the London Olympics this summer.

Organizers say the new route will give more members of the public a chance to see the racers in action.

"This year's competition pays more attention to the interaction between cyclists and locals," said Chen Yiping, the deputy director with the organizer.

Broad city avenues, country roads, as well as the Changjiang dike, are ideal both for cyclists and tourists, said Chen.

Two cyclists, born and raised in Chongming, will take part in the race, said the Shanghai Sports Bureau. One of them, Huang Li, 23, has a place in the Olympics team.

Traffic to the island is expected to be affected as the tunnel-bridge will be closed for the competition. Details of traffic controls will be released soon.

Organizers hope that by bringing together tourism and cycling, the events will become a calling card for the Chongming Island.

For leisure cyclists who just want to get out of the city and get some exercise, Chongming offers plenty of scenic stops, including Dongping National Forest Park, Xisha Wetland and the Yangtze River embankment.

Bikes are loaned out to visitors at main tourism sites and transport hubs on the island free of charge.

Cycling is environmentally friendly transportation, said Chongming officials, in line with green transport and dwelling concepts that Chongming promotes.
