Exhibitions add color to city’s cultural scene

THE New Year holiday offers a great chance to get out and take in some culture. Dozens of exhibitions are taking place around Shanghai with a nice mix of domestic and international artists.
Here are some exhibitions worth checking out.
‘Le Petit Prince’
The exhibition, taking place at Joy City, is the first exhibition of this famous novella, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, in China and is one of a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.
The exhibition space includes a garden, illustrations of the fairy tale, a retro bookshelf, rose arch and fountain designed to bring you into the prince’s world.
The highlight of the show is the indoor garden, where you can make a wish among a huge amount of roses.

‘The Door is Always Open’
Growing up in a Jewish family and influenced by traditional and popular American culture, the surrealist artist Gary Baseman likes to integrate pop culture with black humor. His works are often filled with evil clowns, monsters and magic dolls, which he imagined during his childhood. It’s also his first exhibition on the Chinese mainland.
Opening hours: Through March 5, 2015, 10am-10pm

Habsburg-Sollerich Collection
The North Gate Art Center in Songjiang District opens it doors with an exhibition about the House of Habsburg — one of Europe’s most important royal houses that at one time ruled over Austria, Germany and other countries in Europe. One of the family’s most famous names was Princess Sisi, who yearned to be free of the constraints of royal life.
The exhibition has been organized by Carlos Morell, whose great grandmother was Sisi’s cousin. Morell and his family have collected oil paintings, sketches, letters and photos of the Habsburgs. Some of the exhibits are on display to the public for the first time.

Rockbund Art Museum
It is a contemporary art museum. Since its opening in 2010, the museum has earned a strong reputation for its exhibitions of acclaimed Chinese and international artists.
The museum will open to the public for free tomorrow. The ongoing exhibitions include works by the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. Hurry though, tomorrow is the final day of Rondinone’s exhibit.
