For summer break, how about a nose job?
THE arrival of the two-month summer vacation starting in July means it will be the peak season for students to get plastic surgery.
A local survey found that about 20 percent of high school graduates and university students plan to receive face-lifts.
“Consultations for plastic surgery in the summer vacation started to rise in June and our scheduled surgeries in the two months are always 20 percent more than the usual time,” said Dr Han Sheng, president of the Shanghai Tida Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Hospital.
Among the plastic surgical procedures, double eyelid and nose reshaping are the most popular because they are considered to have the biggest impact on appearance.
“Double eyelid can not only make eyes bigger but also show energy,” said Dr Xiong Junwen from Shanghai Tida Plastic & Cosmetic Hospital.
There are two main methods of double eyelid procedures: full incision and buried sutures.
Full incision can produce a natural look for the long term and reshape the eyes permanently. During the surgery, excessive fat, muscle and skin can be removed. The looser the skin is, the deeper the cut.
People can have the stitches removed in five to seven days, while the total recovery requires three to six months.
The buried sutures method is a non-invasive, non-incision procedure, which is getting popular in recent years due to its quick recovery.
Small sutures are knotted above the eyes to create the folds. There are various types of loops that can be used for the knots. An added benefit is that it is possible to go back to the original state of the eyes even after the double eyelid fold surgery has been completed.
“Young women with thin eyelids and tight muscles and skin can choose this method,” Xiong said.
Over half of people seeking double eyelid are now choosing the buried sutures method because it is non-invasive and requires only seven days for a full recovery.
Nose reshaping is also a common procedure among young people. According to medical experts, the shape and height of a person’s nose is critical for the entire face. There are also two types of nose reshaping surgeries.
One type is to use an implant to make the nose bridge higher. The implants are made either of silicone rubber or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. Each has its advantages, experts said.
Surgeries using silicon rubber are an easy and quick process and the cost is comparatively low.
In addition, it allows the implant to grow with the surrounding tissues after being implanted, making the whole look more natural.
There are also surgeons using a part of the patient’s own soft ear bone as an implant, which prevents rejection.
As an alternative to using implants, many patients are choosing a non-surgical reshaping of their nose with a dermal filler injection, without undergoing invasive surgery.
The procedure brings minimal discomfort and a safe, quick recovery with minimal downtime, doctors said. This reshaping is a good option for patients who would like to achieve a more pleasing appearance without the risks of an invasive surgery. But the effects can only last for six to 12 months, and the patients need another injection in the future.
Breast enlargement is another hot item for young women. But its safety issue is always a stop concern among both industry insiders and beauty seekers.
Breast enlargement is done through the medical implants like silicon gel or the person’s own fat. The modern way is to use both medical implant material and the patient’s own fat transplanted from the belly and thigh.
Anyone considering plastic surgery should go to official hospitals or clinics, and those with a history of hypertension and diabetes must inform the doctor on the first visit, experts said.
Minors should not receive plastic surgery, due to their physical and psychological immaturity, medical experts said.
“In addition to surgeries like double eyelid, we received consultations about self fat transplant and facial bone shaping from young students this summer,” said Dr Han.
Recently, Taiwan has issued a law to ban hospitals from offering plastic surgery to minors.
“There is no such law or regulation in the mainland, but we have our own rule inside the industry and don’t do major plastic surgeries on minors,” Han said.
Many plastic surgeries like nose jobs are not suitable for high school students, because their nose bones haven’t fully developed. “Putting in an implant can impact the nose’s proper development,” Han said.
