Get out there for a good kick about with friends

THE FIFA World Cup is just about to start. During the one-month tournament some men stay up all night to watch the games, some women talk about which players are handsome and some world leaders may even place some fun bets on their team or engage in a little trash talk.

However, when seeing Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard and other star players on the field, some Shanghai soccer fans may feel the itch to get on a pitch and kick a ball around.

There are numerous soccer fields in the city where you can participate in your own “World Cup” with friends. The following venues are also open in the evening.

Shanghai Soccer World

Soccer World is a famous brand in Europe and owns dozens of sports centers in the UK, Germany and Spain. Shanghai Soccer World was established in 2007 and now has two centers in the city — Shanghai Sports Palace in Putuo District and Yuanshen Stadium in the Pudong New Area.

Both centers have up to nine small pitches for five-a-side games and up to three fields for seven-a-side matches. Both feature artificial turf.

The smaller pitches are also used to give soccer clinics to children. The centers invite foreign and domestic professional coaches to give the clinics.

It costs 250 yuan (US$40) per hour for a five-a-side pitch and 350 yuan for a seven-a-side pitch. From 5pm to 11pm the price rises by 100 yuan per hour for either pitch.

Haizhibao Sports Park

It is within the former World Expo site in Pudong. It has about both seven-a-side and five-a-side pitches.

Since it’s relatively new, the facilities are good, including artificial turf and lights. Free parking is available. Prices range from around 200 yuan to 500 yuan per hour.

The facility is popular so booking a pitch at least one week in advance is recommended.

Tera Wellness Club

It’s the largest fitness chain in China and has nearly 50 clubs across Shanghai. Some have five-a-side fields including the clubs on Henan Road M., Pucheng Road and Chengshan Road.

Since many clubs are downtown, where land is scarce, many of them have their soccer fields on the roof. This provides for a fun experience with some surprisingly nice views.

The prices there are around 250 yuan to 350 yuan per hour.
