Great places for meets and meat

Morton's Shanghai

Morton's Shanghai, located on the fourth floor of the prestigious new Shanghai IFC Mall, is the group's first restaurant on the Chinese mainland, following the success of Morton's Hong Kong and Morton's at The Venetian, Macau.

Reflecting the style of the restaurants across the world, the alluring interior features dark woods, subdued lighting and crisp white table linen, with the added bonus of a view of Pudong.

The trademark open kitchen, plus a collection of US artist LeRoy Neiman serigraphs and historic photographs adorning the walls, completes the comfortably chic Morton's setting.

The steakhouse specializes in classic, hearty American cuisine including the finest grain-fed aged beef, fresh seafood and spectacular desserts, using top-quality ingredients and served in generous portions.

The glass-encased cellar at Morton's Shanghai stocks more than 250 labels from the world's finest wineries.

Besides the fine wines, Morton's is renowned for its long list of creative cocktails highlighting top-shelf spirits and strong pours. It has also launched its world famous Mortini Nights at the chic cocktail bar overlooking the lights of Pudong.

From 5-7pm Monday to Friday, Bar 12.21 at Morton's offers attractively priced signature martinis from Morton's extensive cocktail list, accompanied by a complimentary free flow of their famous petite filet mignon steak sandwiches. There is no better way to avoid rush hour and usher in a Shanghai night in style.

Accompanying the drinks, a special "Bar Bites" menu offers bite-sized favorites such as three miniature crab cakes, chicken goujonettes and blue cheese steak fries. A "Bigger Bites" menu is ideal for those who prefer to casually dine at the bar.

Morton's will have a cooking class on June 18 for father and child, and a Father's Day special lunch on June 19.

Bulldog Pub

Bulldog Pub, an authentic British pub in Shanghai enjoys a great location in the former French concession at the corner of Wulumuqi Road and Dongping Road where the surrounding French phoenix trees maintain peace and quiet in the city center.

This long-favorite British pub features wholesome hearty pub food such as homemade pies, fish and chips, burgers and more; as well as pool and darts, and, of course, beers on tap.

Loyal customers from around the world come for the quality pub fare and pints of John Bull Ale. It is a great place to relax and enjoy a pint, throw some darts or watch live Premier League football.

The pub has a classic wooden interior with cork dartboards on the first floor and one of Shanghai's smoothest pool tables on the second.

"We have just finished the decoration of our third-floor terrace," says Ken Woo from the Bulldog team, who promises to bring a better environment to customers this summer.

Bulldog started their barbecue season at the end of last month. The regular barbecue weekend features a buffet of 150 yuan (US$23.14) per person with an "All You Can Eat" menu including all kinds of meats, sausages, burgers and a nice salad selection, as well as one Tiger beer.

Ladies Night is also back at the Bulldog every Wednesday night from 8pm to midnight.

"Men, don't be sad. 2-for-1 for you guys! Bring your girlfriends with you for a free drink," says Woo.

A traditional pub quiz happens every Thursday night and there are live sports on multiple big screens.

Bubba's Texas-style Bar-B-Que and Saloon

Bubba's Texas-style Bar-B-Que and Saloon was founded in 2006 and there are currently two locations in Shanghai, one in Hongqiao and another in Pudong at the Expo Village.

This authentic Texas barbecue joint has the city's most authentic barbecue items, as well as great burgers, steaks and other Western specialties.

Barbecue aficionados are fully satisfied with Bubba's Just Meat menu served by weight for take-out, including smoked chicken quarter, Mongolian beef brisket, pulled pork, honey-cured smoked ham, chopped beef, whole rack pork ribs and premium imported sliced brisket.

The house specials include the imported certified Angus beef served with baked potato or fries, side salad and jalape?o-cornbread muffins.

At Bubba's the meat is on the pit from six to 15 hours, and never cooked in an oven, on a gas grill or over charcoal.

"The authentic American-style barbecue is cooked 'low and slow,' using real wood to tenderize and impart a unique flavor to all types of meat," says Kenneth Walker, the restaurant founder. "This 'low and slow' cooking process is what gives Bubba's smoked meats their unique flavor for all to enjoy."

Walker says they only use premium imported meats and then use their own proprietary blends of spices and sauces to flavor them before, during and after they slow cook them using split apple wood logs from China's domestic orchards.

Bubba's hosts an annual Chili Cook-off event each fall and last month held the inaugural Shanghai Barbeque Cook-off.
