Hangzhou Tourist Consumption Cards rechargeable

The Hangzhou Tourism Commission is making Tourist Consumption Cards available to purchase from September 25. During this peak tourist season, visitors with the cards can conveniently enjoy discounts while sightseeing in Hangzhou.

The consumption card can be used in restaurants, scenic spots, hotels, shopping malls and for public transportation.

More than 1,000 stores of 210 brands have signed up to accept the cards. An updated list of the participating stores is available at www.gotohz.com.

Stores are offering different levels of discounts for those using the cards and are posting the discount at their locations. Some discounts are ample — Zhejiang International Hotel, for example, offers a 56 percent discount.

The card also offers a benefit when it is recharged. If a tourist puts 100 yuan (US$16.33) on the card, the total added is 110 yuan — 10 percent is complimentary. However, each card can be recharged only once a day. And the accumulated complimentary amount can be no more than 200 yuan.

Participating outlets and locations to recharge the cards or get refunds of unused amounts cover all of Hangzhou, including tourist distribution centers, public bicycle rental stations, Metro stations, railway stations, bus stations and Xiaoshan International Airport. Tourists outside Hangzhou can also purchase the cards at www.gotohz.com.

When tourists buy the cards, they don’t need to give their names. Each card holds no more than 1,000 yuan.

The cards are divided into an ordinary version and a souvenir version. If tourists buy the ordinary version, they must pay 20 yuan as a deposit, which is returned if the cards are submitted for a refund in seven days. Tourists need to pay 30 yuan for a souvenir card. It is not refundable.

The commission has already issued its first batch of 100,000 tourist consumption cards.

Each tourist is allowed to purchase only two cards at a time. Hangzhou’s government has invested 20 million yuan issuing the cards.

“It is the first authentic tourist consumption card issued in China’s mainland, and it resembles Hong Kong’s Octopus card,” said Wang Xinzhang, vice director of the Hangzhou Tourism Commission. Hong Kong’s Octopus card is a pioneer in contactless smart card applications and a part of everyday life in Hong Kong.

Hangzhou locals can share the preferential discounts using their Hangzhou Citizen Cards.

The Hangzhou Tourism Commission also provides a benefit for tourists who don’t want to buy the cards.

Discount coupons are being published in newspapers in 10 nearby cities, such as Shanghai and Qingdao, Shandong Province. They can be used at Hangzhou businesses including some teahouses and restaurants.
