Head to the burbs for pleasant spring outings

WITH the weather warming up some people may be in the mood for a lovely spring outing. Out in Shanghai’s suburbs there are numerous areas to enjoy blooming flowers, blossoming trees and other scenes of nature.

Shanghai Daily recommends three places with distinct themes to bring you closer to nature.

Fengxian Rape Flower Festival

Fengxian District is one of the best places in the country to appreciate the magnificent golden sea of rape flowers. The annual Fengxian Rape Flower Festival has already opened in Zhuanghang Town and it will continue until April 13.

Visitors can pick fresh fruit and vegetables from the fields, or spend a comfortable afternoon fishing like local old men often do.

Meanwhile, children will likely enjoy exploring Dinosaur World, where more than 20 life-size replicas of dinosaurs are displayed near the flower fields. Fossils and a simulated excavation site provide a great learning experience for children.

Date: Through April 13

Address: Zhuanghang Town

Admission: Free

The festival has been held in March and April annually since 1991 in Nanhui. The area has more than 3,300 hectares of peach trees — the most in eastern China.

Nanhui is along the coast of the East China Sea, providing beautiful views of coastal towns and peach orchards.

Visitors may also be interested in trying some rural food or catching a dragon dance or Jiangnan sizhu  (an old stringed and woodwind instrument) performance.

Date: Through April 15

Address: Nanhui Peach Blossom Village

Admission: 55 yuan for adults, 30 yuan for children

Jiading Wisteria Park

This park on Bole Road is one of only three wisteria parks in the world. It opened in 2000 to celebrate Jiading’s friendly cooperation with Wake Town of Okayama Prefecture in Japan.

Using a combination of Chinese and Japanese styles, 27 varieties of wisteria can be found in the park.

April and May is the best time to view wisteria plants as the flowers bloom in various shades of purple, white and pink.

Address: 45 Bole Rd, Jiading District

Open hours: 9am-6pm

Admission: Free
