Island escape makes for great weekend

CYCLING around scenic Chongming Island makes for a wonderful day in the late spring and early summer. If you do, check out these four destinations.

Chongming Museum

Chongming Museum is one of the most important cultural attractions on the island. The museum covers an area of 23 acres. The museum was founded in 1327 to protect cultural relics. Visitors will also find numerous historic buildings built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911).

Dongping National Forest Park

Birds, trees and flowers are the big draw to this park. A quick 10-minute walk west from the main entrance brings visitors into a fairy tale like land with abundant trees, bamboo groves, flowers, grass and orchards. The national forest park includes more than 500 species of trees and flowers.

 Xisha Wetland Park

Xisha Wetland Park covers 3 square kilometers and admission is free. Birdwatchers will love this park as they can stroll along a wooden walkway and gaze at water birds in their natural habitat along with other wildlife. The park is used as a base for scientific research.

Qianwei Ecological Village

Qianwei Ecological Village is close to Dongping National Forest Park and offers a look at local customs on the island.Visitors can try traditional weaving on old looms, working water wheels, pushing a wheelbarrow and working in the fields. Villagers also show visitors how they make scented oils. The village farm offers everyone a chance to pick their own vegetables.

Tour allows for chance to catch World Cup cycling race

Chongming Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River is a great escape for city dwellers. The 1,041-square-kilometer island is the third largest island in China and is easily accessible since the Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge opened in 2009.

The UCI Women’s Road World Cup cycling race will be held on the island on May 18. Eighteen teams from around the world will compete in the race.

Shanghai Daily teams up with Shanghai Huating Overseas Tourist Co Ltd to organize a trip to watch the race. Participants can also go sightseeing and savor local delicacies.

Itinerary of the one-day tour:

7:30 Meet guide in the lobby of            Shanghai Hotel, 505 Wulumuqi           Road, Jing’an District

7:30-9:30    Leave for Chongming Island

10:00      Watch the start of UCI       Women’s Road World Cup

10:30-11:50 Ride a bike to Shou’an Temple             and Jin’ao Hill

12:00-13:00 Lunch at a farmer’s restaurant

13:30-14:00 Watch the finish of the World             Cup race

14:00-15:00 Join the World Cup carnival            and see the Chongming New           Town Planning Exhibition

15:00-17:00  Return to Shanghai Hotel

Tour price: 390 yuan (US$62.62) per adult, 280 yuan for children aged 7-12, 200 yuan for kids 3-6, and free for kids under 3

The price covers bus transport, bike rental, English-speaking guide, lunch and admissions.
