Keep children busy at vocational schools

AS the summer is approaching, to let children have a substantial and meaningful summer holidays has been a tough mission for many parents. To keep them stay home with television and video games is apparently not a good idea, but what else?

Something you might don’t know is that in Shanghai, there are many vocational schools which are open to the public for free in the summer holidays. All the schools will organize various activities to teach participants practical vocational and life skills.

Here we will introduce three of them to you. Expat children can apply for these free activities as well. But since there is no language service on site, it’s recommended to come with a friend or parent who can speak Chinese to do the interpretation.

Making a soap yourself

We use soap to wash hands and clothes every day, but do you and your children know how soap is made? At the Shanghai Industrial Technical School, there is a mini soap-making production line where children can observe the whole process of soap is made by modern machines and operate on the production line as well.

Shanghai Industrial Technical School is strong in digital control and mould design. Teachers there will guide your children to add different kinds and colors of raw soap materials into the mould and see a bar of soap come out at the end of the production line.

Cooking Chinese food

If you and your children live in Shanghai, you must have tried many kinds of Chinese food. But do you know how to make any of them, especially traditional Chinese dim sum such as shaomai (steamed dumplings), sticky rice cake and red bean buns?

Come to Zhonghua Vocational School, which is the cradle for cooks who are trained to learn many kinds of cuisines in the world. The school offers three cooking courses — western pastry, Chinese pastry and Chinese food — for children aged above 10 years old.

Car maintenance and repair

Do you know how repair workers check the conditions of cars and how they repair damaged cars? Do you want to make a painting on the body of car?

Bring your child to Shanghai Communications School which has a mini car maintenance station to learn the maintenance steps and do it himself or herself. The teachers will teach the basic knowledge of cars and engines to the children and let them work on real cars with various brands.

Students can also learn how to use environmental-friendly paints and coatings to draw imaginary patterns on car bodies.
