Make the most of the extra day off
THIS year's Mid-Autumn Festival will fall on September 12, which is a Monday so people can enjoy a three-day weekend break. Visiting somewhere in or near the city for one day and relaxing for the remaining two days is a great way to spend the extended holiday. The Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center offers several recommendations for places to visit.
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province
One day isn't really long enough for a trip to nearby Hangzhou since the city has countless tourism treasures for people to explore. But simply spending some relaxing time at Xixi Wetland or paying a worship visit to Lingyin Temple can make one's day. However, visitors should be aware that Hangzhou gets very crowded during holidays.
Xitang, Zhejiang Province
Rivers weave through this watertown, and a covered corridor, which stretches for nearly 1 kilometer and has a history of hundreds of years, is a distinct landmark of the town. Constructions built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) are well-preserved, maintaining ancient styles and features for tourists to appreciate.
Suzhou, Jiangsu Province
The city, praised as "Heaven on Earth," remains one of the top short-term trip choices for Shanghai residents. It features the most typical ancient Chinese gardens such as Humble Administrator's Garden and Liu Garden, a stroll through either of which provides a feast for tourists' eyes.
Yangcheng Lake, Jiangsu Province
A trip to the lake is a trip for delicacies. Yangcheng Lake, near Suzhou, is one of the best places for hairy crabs on the Chinese mainland as the crabs found there are considered the "King of Crabs." Although the Mid-Autumn Festival falls before the best crab-tasting season, other fresh lake food, such as Mandarin fish and shrimp, is available to reward the tongue.
Songjiang District
Back in Shanghai, this district features tourism resorts catering for different needs. Sheshan National Forest Park and Chenshan Botanical Garden offer an abundance of greenery and fresh air, while the Happy Valley amusement park provides excitement and thrills. Getting there is also convenient, because even if the highway is crowded, Metro lines provide another option.
Jiading District
This can be another trip for both eyes and tongue. Guyi Garden is a world of flowers, among which water lily blooming in late summer is a must-see. Picking grapes at the orchids in Malu is a fun pursuit as visitors can enjoy picking them for themselves, plus the grapes there are the most delicious in the city. And as the cradle of the famed xiaolongbao (little steamed buns), there is no better place to try them than Nanxiang Town.
