Polyp removal
BLEEDING is the most common symptom, usually during or after defecation. Some patients also lose weight or become anemic. Occasionally a polyp can be cancerous.
Polyps in children may lead to massive bleeding, intestinal obstruction or the inversion of one portion of the intestine within another.
Doctors believe that juvenile polyps should be removed once diagnosis is confirmed to prevent cancerous changes and other complications. The long-term chronic loss of blood can also impact a child’s normal growth.
Doctors have three options to remove a polyp — open surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery or colonoscopic polypectomy under anesthesia. The last method is the most common as it is the least traumatizing, most economical and relapses are uncommon.
