Pudong stands tall in quality cultural offerings

Most people associate the Pudong New Area with its financial achievements and booming economy. However, it also has established itself as a cultural powerhouse as well.

• Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

As a key social and cultural project funded by Shanghai’s government, the museum is a place for everyone to immerse themselves in the aura of science. The museum is within walking distance of Metro Line 2’s Century Park Station. It covers an area of 68,000 square meters and cost 1.76 billion yuan (US$286 million).

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has 14 thematic exhibition halls including World of Animals, Spectrum of Life, Spider Exhibition, Earth Exploration, Cradle of Designers and Children’s Science Land. All exhibits are informative and have a lot of fun. Visitors will not only learn from images, videos and models but also experience impressive virtual scenes from different area of the Earth.

In addition, it also offers visitors four special-purpose film theaters including IMAX and 4D effects.

• Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

Located just next to Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is famous as the biggest aquarium in China with an area of 20,500 square meters. Opened in 2002, the aquarium has a collection of more than 450 species of aquatic animals from five continents and four oceans.

The large shark tank is one of the highlights. The Yangtze River Rare Aquatic Animals Exhibition is also something unique to this aquarium. It showcases myriads of aquatic creatures in Yangtze River, the longest river in China.

• Shanghai Museum of TCM

Located at the new campus of Shanghai TCM University in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Shanghai TCM Museum offers insights and historical facts as well as major achievements of traditional Chinese medicine culture and development in the last 5,000 years.

The museum covers an area of 4,000 square meters with a five-theme exhibition hall of more than 14,000 TCM items as far back as ancient times. Some very rare and precious TCM medicine including Chinese caterpillar fungus and wild ginseng are displayed with the introduction of their function.
