Pudong’s specialized museums unique and fascinating
The Pudong New Area is often considered a symbol of the reform and opening up of Shanghai and the country. It is known for the rapid development of its financial and high-tech industries.
Pudong has many public venues to disseminate knowledge and scientific technology, such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, which are well known Shanghai landmarks. There are also many smaller museums and institutes that are specialized in a specific field of industry or scientific research. Let’s take a glance at some of them.
• Shanghai Bank Museum
Opened by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Shanghai Branch, the Shanghai Bank Museum is the first museum of the financial industry of China. It was opened in 2000.
With an area of 1,500 square meters, the museum has more than 20,000 exhibits related to the banking business and displays 2,000 of them to the public. The exhibits concentrate on the development of Shanghai’s banks. Visitors can see different bank notes, banking tools, coins and financial publications of different eras in the museum.
The display includes some very rare artifacts such as a collection of all the 1,113 kinds of bank notes issued by 54 banks from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to the Republic of China period (1911-1949). It’s the only remaining collection of its kind.

• Polar Research Institute of China
The research institute was established in 1989. It’s the only center in China on polar research and logistics support, providing technical support to Chinese polar scientists.
It focuses its researches mainly on the influence of global climate change on polar ice, the ecological environment of polar regions, the ocean environment and mineral resources. It displays meteorites, ice samples and low-temperature organisms collected by Chinese scientists from the polar regions.
Visitors to the 1,000-square-meter display hall can learn about the geography of polar regions and China’s exploration via videos and pictures.
You can also find detailed information of Xuelong icebreaker, which was temporarily trapped in the ice of Antarctica and broke free and made its way out last week after it rescued 52 passengers from a trapped Russian vessel.

• Shanghai Museum of TCM
Shanghai Museum of TCM, located at the Shanghai University of TCM, is the biggest museum of its kind in China. It was opened in 2004, with three small museums integrated to display traditional Chinese medicine’s history, medicine samples and the history of the university.
The museum of TCM history has more than 14,000 artifacts concerning TCM from the Stone Age to modern times to show the great achievements and important stories of China’s medical industry development throughout history.
The museum of medicine samples exhibits more than 3,000 TCM medical materials.
