Sports university shows it has a winning history
Editor’s note:
Shanghai’s numerous universities offer some of the most enchanting spaces for a leisurely stroll. Walking around these campuses and admiring the architecture is like traveling back through history: imagining the memories of its students and the destinies that have been shaped. Remembering the college years is often a moving experience. Shanghai Daily begins a series touring seven university campuses in the city to shed some light on the standout buildings.
Our stop this week on Shanghai Daily’s tour of the historical buildings and unique sites of the city’s college campuses is Shanghai University of Sport.
Founded in 1952, the university pioneered higher education institutions of this kind in China. Over the past 60 or so years, the multi-disciplined university has prided itself to a commitment to unending development of teaching and the comprehensive cultivation of talent.
Its students have excelled in many sports, such as wrestling, martial arts and boxing, making their instructors proud by winning honors and awards in domestic and international sports events.
Chinese Martial Arts Museum
Completed in November, 2007, it perfectly fits the pioneering nature of the Shanghai University of Sport: It is the first museum of the world to present the history and culture of wushu — China’s ancient martial art.
The walls are decorated with the magnificent figures of martial artists of the past, while inside are 2,000 exhibits, sure to deepen visitors’ knowledge of Chinese martial arts and detailing how wushu has evolved through history.
The museum features a history hall and an underground hall with a 3D cinema.
Green Tile Building
Named after its green-glazed tile roof and designed by Dong Dayou, the spectacular building is an extraordinary spot in the campus, since buildings of this traditional palatial style are usually located in the northern part of China in ancient cities such as Beijing or Xi’an. Historical architecture of Shanghai is more usually dominated by buildings of Western design and shikumen houses.
On either side of the front steps are stone lions standing guard, while the symmetrical wings of the building give the visitor the feeling of balance and harmony.
Built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) style, the construction was completed in 1933 and encompasses an area of approximately 6,000 square meters. It formerly served as the center of the Shanghai Special Municipal Government.
In April 1935, the building provided the backdrop — quite literally — to a historic event when more than 50 couples in China’s very first group marriage ceremony had their wedding photographs taken in front of it. People from the neighborhood gathered to witness the ceremony and overseas film companies such as MGM and Paramount attended to record it.
Multi-functional gymnasium
Completed in September, 1997, it encompasses an area of more than 8,000 square meters and can seat approximately 1,300 people. This impressive building provides an arena for the university’s athletes to improve and test their physical skills during competition, while it also hosts the official ceremonies of the university.
