Stop-motion films move into Zhejiang museum

For animation fans, a wave of stop-motion films is coming to Hangzhou. Through June 14, the Zhejiang Art Museum will hold a series of screenings and discussions to coincide with the China International Cartoon and Animation Festival.

Stop-motion filmmaking is a painstaking technique where physical objects and scenes are manipulated in small increments and then photographed on individual film frames. When these frames are played at normal motion-picture speed, they create a sense of continuous movement.

Works from Japan, UK, USA, France, Canada, and the Czech Republic will be screened at the museum, as will outstanding works from students at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Admission is free.

Directors, filmmakers and animation industry insiders will also be on hand to hold talks and meet with viewers.

Wong Lai Ming from Hong Kong and Xue Yanping, editor-in-chief of the Animation Pavilion series, will give a lecture on award-winning Asian films.

Dong Hai, the founder of Stop-Motion Animation magazine, and Wu Zhijing, the founder of Studio Fantastic Sky and a director in his own right, will lead an event where participants can try their hand at stop motion techniques.

Directors Pi San and Zhang Zhe, as well as independent animation producer Ray Lei, will also give speeches and lectures.
