ALTHOUGH Kindles and iPads have made it possible to download e-books quickly and easily, holding a book makes for a different reading experience.
With a book you can feel the weight of words and sentences.
While there aren't as many bookstores in Shanghai as before, these three recommendations all sell books in foreign languages.
Garden Books
Garden Books is on Changle Road, near Shaanxi Road S. The two-story building provides a relaxed, quiet atmosphere.
Books here are imported directly from publishers abroad, including publications in English, German, Spanish, French and more. Many items are best sellers and magazines are updated rather quickly. The second floor features children's books along with some comfortable chairs and sofas to encourage kids to read.
The books in the store are mainly for sale, and the prices adjust according to currency exchange rates. Check their catalogue of books on their website at www.bookzines.com.
The reading area on the first floor is also a great place for enjoying a cup of tea in the afternoon. A selection of desserts and beverages are offered.

Shanghai Book Traders is one of the most well-known bookstores in Shanghai that sells publications in English and other languages. The two-floor store is divided into many sections including one for fiction.
The first floor has a section of books introducing the culture of China, covering topics like history, geography, economics, law, folk traditions and so on. It is helpful if you want to learn more about Chinese history.
The literature section features novels and classics that are imported, including those in English, French, German, Russian and more.
Popular books like "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins can also be found at the store.
There is also a section for dictionaries in different languages.
The second floor mainly sells books for academic purposes, including various tests for English both in China and abroad, as well as studying materials for other languages.
