Suzhou's own Expo draws fans
THE fan-shaped SuzhouExpo is one of the biggest exposition centers in east China and it is expected to attract many international shows through World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
The 12,000-square-meter venue in a wooded setting looks like a half-open fan from above, reflecting Suzhou's cultural characteristics. It was designed by US-based SOM architects.
Every year more than 100 conferences and expositions are held in its world-class facilities. It also serves as a science and cultural center. It provides 1,500 parking places.
It opened in 2003 in Suzhou Industrial Park next to Jinjin Lake.
After SuzhouExpo was established, CEO Chen Gang and the management team visited Europe to learn about the exposition industry and Hong Kong where they also received training.
Today it reflects the highest international standards of the exposition industry.
SuzhouExpo belongs to global associations of the exhibitions industry, including the Union of International Fairs and the International Association of Emergency Managers. It partners with more than 100 embassies and consulates in China.
The World Expo is expected to offer more opportunities for SuzhouExpo as companies at the Expo will seek new places outside Shanghai to hold expositions and develop their China markets. SuzhouExpo is promoting cooperation and communication among international enterprises.
"Everyone can be our valued customer and we can make friends and exchange useful information," says CEO Chen.
He says an environmentally friendly exposition is a major trend in the exposition industry and SuzhouExpo is incorporating sustainable, low-carbon concepts in its operations.
SuzhouExpo is seeking to connect with tourism and other industries and build Suzhou into an even more desirable destination for business and leisure.
"The exposition industry is at a grand stage, and I have a lot of dreams to realize in Suzhou," says Chen.
