The lowdown on renting high-level cars, drivers

Shanghai’s public transport system is becoming more and more convenient, but there are still many places in the city that are not that easy to access.

Of course, you can buy your own vehicle or grab a taxi. However, there is a third option — rent a car, which is getting increasingly popular, especially for expatriates.

There are more than 20 licensed car-rental companies in Shanghai, and most of them are state-owned companies or joint ventures with international companies.

When you are at the company, you need to consider whether you need a driver. Of course it’s cheaper if you drive yourself. If you need a driver, apart from the basic rental and the maintenance and insurance fee for the car, you will also have to pay the basic salary for the driver and a package for the driver including social security, meals and communication fee.

Most car-rental companies in Shanghai provide long- and short-term leases. For self-drive, you must rent a vehicle for at least an entire day at about 300 yuan (US$48), according to Han Shen, key account associate director with Hertz Business.

For a chauffeur service, you may reserve the service for an hour at about 100 yuan, Han added.

Most companies offer bilingual contracts, and customers should pay close attention to the details to avoid any misunderstandings.

Most companies offer a grace period. For self-drive, you have to pay the extra cost by the hour for a car returned after the grace period. For chauffeur service, the driver must pay for the extra costs if the car is returned late.

Normally, you can return the car at different branch of the company, but some companies might charge an extra fee.
