Three hair salons are a cut above
WHERE do I get a haircut? As more and more salons crop up in the city, residents are spoiled for choice.
Here are a few good ones.
Tucked away in Gubei's Carrefour, QKuts: Kids, Kuts, and Stuff specializes, as you might guess, in haircuts for children and even appeals to the stubborn six-year-old unwilling to sit still for a proper trim.
Aware that haircuts are boring to most children, the staff and stylists have fixed that problem. With walls decorated in orange and blue and cabinets filled with toys, the shop provides a fun and colorful environment.
Chairs are modeled into miniature cars and children are provided comic books. Difficult children are given sweets.
Half a year ago, Kelly Wang and two other concerned parents realized there was a need for a suitable hair salon that could cut a fidgety child's hair. Their aim was to develop a salon primarily for youngsters.
"For a child, a haircut is not something to look forward to," says Kelly Wang, QKuts' co-founder and general manager. "The idea is to use cartoons and lollipops to distract the kids."
ID Hair, on the other hand, is all about grownups and provides typical American hair salon service. Opened 13 years ago, it has two shops in Puxi, both on Nanchang Road and gets a daily flow of expats.
In addition to cuts, color, perms and so on, it also provides hair extensions and other less common services.
Five or six stylists are from Hong Kong and several others are from Taiwan, says George, ID Hair's manager. Hairdressers also come from Singapore and Switzerland. All are experienced.
Across the river in the Pudong New Area, Head to Toe is one of the few family salons in Shanghai and is especially popular with the expat community.
Established seven years ago in the heart of Jinqiao, Head to Toe not only cuts hair but also provides spa services, including manicures and waxing.
Katie Scheu, a high school junior and frequent customer, says, "When you get there, they shampoo your hair and massage your head, which feels really nice."
"This is a place where families can come together," says stylist Jeffrey, adding that people are drawn by the array of services and family-friendly atmosphere.
All the products used are foreign brands. Prices are reasonable, which contributes to popularity.
