Trade fair taste sensations
WITH the opening of World Expo 2010 Shanghai, and more generally China, is becoming a worldwide hub for the hospitality, food and beverage industries. It also highlights stronger competition in the global hospitality and food sector to grab a slice of the huge Chinese cake.
The next three days from tomorrow to Friday will see 1,339 exhibitors from 76 countries and regions showing food and beverage products and hospitality services at the annual SIAL China trade show. The event is celebrating this year its 10th anniversary and is held at Shanghai New International Expo Center.
"Optimism and upturn are definitely the key words for 2010," said Olivier Darras, exhibition director.
"One month before the show, all exhibition space, which had been increased by 20 percent, was already booked," he added.
Companies from France, the USA, Spain, South Korea, Italy, Mexico, Ireland, India, Argentina, Uruguay and Portugal, among others, will partake in the show. New pavilions will feature Poland, Japan and Czech Republic.
SIAL China also notes strong development of domestic exhibitors with bigger participation from Shandong, Zhejiang, Heilongjiang, Hunan and Guangdong provinces, and Shanghai. One area has been allocated to the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the Chinese Dairy Products Association will also be there.
The organizers have welcomed Mexico as the Guest Country of Honor and claim it will be an opportunity to discover a new appreciation for Mexican cuisine during three days of food and beverage tasting.
This year the organizers have decided to highlight a Chinese province as Province of Honor and the first one will be Shandong.
There will be a dedicated Trends and Innovations Area, where a retrospective will highlight the main Chinese innovations in the F&B industry in the past decade.
According to a recent survey, China is now the world's biggest market for spirits and the world's fastest growing market for wine.
A series of events such as Best Buy China Competition, Tasting Room and Pedagogical Area will take place during the show.
The Wine Innovation Forum, an informational display which generated a warm response last year, will again take place at the show. Worldwide top brands and main producing regions will present their wines and spirits.
The international chefs association, Escoffier, will carry out innovative and high-ranking culinary demonstrations inside the Cooking Trends Area.
