UTC China supports innovative talent

UNITED Technologies Corp (UTC), the world’s leading provider of systems and services to the global building and aerospace industries, speaks highly of China’s potential for technological innovation and will continue to invest in both research and development activities in Shanghai and in talent development in China.
“Big trends like urbanization and the growth of middle class in China drive business at UTC,” Michael McQuade, UTC senior vice president for science and technology, told Shanghai Daily. “To support these trends, UTC is focusing on innovation in China.”
In 1997, UTC established United Technologies Research Center (UTRC)China, the first wholly foreign owned facility in China focusing solely on research. UTC has two other Shanghai-
based R&D centers, which are closely associated with their respective business units and focus on product improvement. UTC’s Otis High-Rise Center of Excellence, for instance, mainly addresses how computational design, virtual engineering and information components in elevators support smart high-rise buildings.
“In addition to manufacturing products here, we now also design products in Shanghai that are distributed worldwide. As the talent matters most to our business, we locate our research at where the smartest people are. And we think Shanghai is our best choice,” McQuade said.
With more than 2,200 employees and eight manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai, UTC spares no effort to help create a diversified, innovative atmosphere for business development.
UTC promotes employee learning through the company’s Employee Scholar Program, and also invests heavily in STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics) education
to promote interest in innovation and cultivate the next generation of engineers, scientists and researchers, according to McQuade.
Through its Employee Scholar Program, the US-based company has already invested US$14 million in college education for its China employees — with 1,216 degrees earned and 390 employees currently enrolled.
With regard to STEM education, UTC has co-launched various programs with partners such as Junior Aachievement and the China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development to inspire future talent.
