Visit 150 places in city to learn about science

As a modern and international metropolis, Shanghai has been concerned about science education for a long time. During the ninth Five Year Plan (1996-2000), the city decided to launch a project to build 100 science education bases in Shanghai.

After more than 15 years of effort, Shanghai now has 150 science education bases around the city, including museums, parks, activity centers and universities. Most of them are open to the public for free or with low admission.

Now and in future articles, we will lead you to those venues in different areas of the city, exploring the fun and meaningful contents of science, history and urban development.

• Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center

Opened on February 25, 2000, the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center occupies 3,600 square meters with a height of 43.3 meters. It’s a landmark of People’s Square in the city center.

The exhibition center, with the theme “City, People, Environment, Development,” uses technology to display the achievements of Shanghai in urban construction since the late 1970s.

The 1:500 scale model of the city inside the inner ring is said to be the biggest professionally done city model in the world. It shows the core of the city of over 110 square kilometers in a 600-square-meter model with high-tech audio and lighting equipment. The display highlights the most flourishing part of the city.

The center also hosts various temporary exhibitions related to urban management and scientific promotion, such as displays on urban sculptures, future ideas, historical heritage, environmental protection and modern construction.

• Jiangnan Shipyard Science Popularization & Education Center

Jiangnan Shipyard is one of the most famous shipbuilding facilities in China’s history. It was first established as Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau, which was founded in 1865 in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The Jiangnan Shipyard Science Popularization & Education Center was constructed in 1995 and renovated in 2004. It’s a museum that tells the history of industry and science in Shanghai and China throughout three centuries.

With an exhibition area of 1,800 square meters, the museum is divided into four pavilions to show the different products in different ages, such as China’s first submarine, first 10,000-ton hydraulic press and first cross-sea train ferry.

• Shanghai International Exchange Center for Population

Shanghai International Center for Population Communication is an authoritative scientific institute to promote knowledge of population issues and the policy of family planning.

With about 500 square meters of exhibition area, the two-floor exhibition center displays the different population trends and policies through books, pictures, exhibit items and multimedia.

It features different themes, including an exhibition of contraception, the ancient sex culture of China and a grand exhibition hall for theme shows. Visitors can learn not only about the sexual conventions of ancient times but also gain a lot of health knowledge.
