Where to go in city for New Year celebrations

IT’S human nature to spend important moments with family and friends, and in China, the Spring Festival is the time when people prefer to stay at home and celebrate with family members.

While in other countries, New Year is a time for getting together with the family, in China the countdown to 2015 will be more an occasion for revellers — though there are family options too.

On New Year’s Eve, people will gather at places across the city to enjoy the countdown and bring in the New Year. When the New Year bells ring, cheers will break out, lovers will kiss and well-wishers give big hugs to those around them, friends or strangers alike — as in many other countries.

In Shanghai, there are several perfect options for the New Year countdown. Just remember to be prepared for the severe traffic jams after the bells — it might take you hours to get home.

Last year, many revellers stayed at the Bund until 5:30am when local Metro services began again. This year, though some of Metro lines will extend their hours for 30 minutes, it won’t help the crowds as the last train will still leave at midnight.

But that’s the cost of welcoming in 2015. So if you are ready for a sleepless night celebrating, here we go!

The Bund

The Bund is a traditional option for the New Year countdown due to its stunning riverside location. And the lightshow promises to be something special, with colorful lights illuminating both the historic and modern buildings along both sides of the Huangpu River.

Last year, the lightshow at the Bund impressed tens of thousands of people there and millions watching on television. Organizers say this year’s will surpass that and is not to be missed.

Longhua Temple

In Shanghai, people gather at Longhua Temple to hear the bells ringing to welcome the New Year. It’s widely believed that hearing these will bring good fortune, and many people will take their whole families to the temple.

On the Pudong bank of the Huangpu River, a grand countdown party with balloon flying is set to be another highlight of New Year celebrations. When the big moment arrives, 2,015 balloons will be released simultaneously, to the accompaniment of music and a lightshow. It’s believed that all the troubles and worries of 2014 will fly away with the balloons, and that 2015 will bring happiness.
