Winner's trophy a work of art
THE winner of the Chinese Grand Prix is presented a trophy that was designed and made in Shanghai by Shi Senbin.
The trophy is made of an intricate blend of glass, bronze and cloisonne enamel, a material unique to China. It takes more than four months to manufacture the trophy due to the complexity.
The design concept was inspired by a traditional Chinese tripod goblet, used as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century-770 BC) as a symbol of achievement. The tripod goblet was also used by monarchs and people of nobility in ancient China.
Smaller versions of the winner's trophy will be available for second and third place positions.
The manufacturing process draws upon Shi's extensive expertise in this area, his skills and knowledge have been passed down from previous generations. It includes welding and molding cloisonne enamel - a traditional Chinese technique for decorating enamel objects. Then the cloisonne enamel is polished and sanded, an extremely laborious process taking many days. The cast glass ring is molded and decorated with the F1 logo. The final touch is to use a traditional Chinese gold-plating decoration technique that dates back thousands of years, to provide a hard-wearing yet luxurious look to the trophy.
"I am delighted the trophy design will be seen on a global platform, and I hope it will raise the profile of Chinese heritage around the world," Shi says.
