British International School Shanghai takes lessons to a new level
CHILDREN'S education is one of the most important things ever for parents. Choosing a good school is not an easy matter at all.
As one of the top international schools in Shanghai, the British International School Shanghai enjoys a fine reputation and is continuing to extend its campus and facilities.
By September next year, the third campus at Puxi covering 32,000 square meters, will be opened.
Established in September 2005, the school is run by Nord Anglia, a world leader in international education. The company operates two integrated divisions, International Schools and Learning Services, which are based solidly upon decades of outstanding education in the UK.
The British educational experience on offer at the school is unashamedly traditional in many respects but at the same time forward-looking and dynamic.
The BISS at Puxi now features two modern, extremely well-appointed campuses with separate specialist facilities for primary and secondary students in Huacao Town of Minhang District.
Both are ideally situated within minutes of a range of very popular expatriate residential areas, and offer all the key elements of the English National Curriculum with additional benefits afforded by its status as an IBO World School.
One of the school campuses at Puxi is a University of Cambridge International Examination Center. It is also recognized as an official London Examinations International Center of Learning.
Work on the new campus has started and the new building will be completed next March and put into use in September, 2010. The new campus will be close to the current two campuses in Huacao Town. Half of the campus area will be a study area and the other half will be a play area, with a football field, swimming pool, artists' studios and a theater.
"It will become one of the top campus facilities in Shanghai. Our beautiful, spacious campus and high-quality modern facilities enable us to offer a rich variety of extracurricular activities which further encourage the development of each individual's strengths and interests," says Kevin Foyle, the principal, who has more than 20 years' experience of education and came to Shanghai two years ago.
Foyle loves Shanghai which he describes as a city of energy with beautiful architecture. He is passionate about his career in education and his students.
"What we care most about is our students, and our staff is one of the most important advantages of our school, as well as the good facilities," he says.
There are 1,000 students aged from 3 to 18 and 100 teachers at the school. The students come from over 50 countries and regions including Britain, the US, Australia, France and South Korea. Students who have graduated here have entered universities all around world.
BISS seeks to prepare its students to play their part as responsible citizens in an increasingly challenging and rapidly changing world.
"For students who don't speak English as their first language, our staff will particularly help them with the language at the beginning of their study," says Foyle.
Other language courses like Mandarin, French, German and Spanish are also provided at the school.
In each academic year the school hosts a range of extracurricular activities involving the local community and other institutions at a local, national and international level.
"Students here have a happy campus life. They can have a lot of fun during class and afterwards there are sports, art, music and performances," says Foyle.
