Learning and aiming for excellence in every way

IN our quest for excellence, Shanghai Singapore International School believes that some things cannot be taken for granted and others do not change. In order to cultivate our students' minds we have to engage in new learning each and every day of their lives and have them work with others in a caring and committed way for the betterment of their lives and our world.

We strive to nurture the whole child, and to ensure that these conditions take place we have purposely planned and structured our building program on five important components we call "excellences."

Academic Excellence: "Achievement through rigor and relevance."

The Singapore educational system is one of the most rigorous in the English-speaking world. The school prepares our students with the necessary attitudes and current skills to cope with the demands of increasing intellectual pursuits as they move on to higher institutes of learning.

Moral Excellence: "The quality of doing right."

Character building has been part of our curriculum for some time, both in the form of infused lessons within the subjects, and a dedicated one-hour lesson every week. While every culture may have its own view on morals, our curriculum carries a traditional Asian-centric moral view, with an infusion of values from other Western cultures.

Aesthetics Excellence: "Bringing out the best in oneself in the form of performances and displays."

From the visual, to the musical, to the dramatic arts, all parts of aesthetics are covered within our school curriculum. Plenty of opportunities for performance (both in school and in public venues), as well as mass singing during the mornings, will allow our pupils to grow up with the ability to appreciate and engage in cultural pursuits.

Physical Excellence: "A quest for a lifestyle choice."

A wide range of co-curricular activities, as well as two hours of physical education every week, strengthens our pupils and enables them to grow and develop healthily into young adults. All our pupils participate in exciting morning aerobics twice a week.

Social Excellence: "The learning of teamwork and interpersonal skills."

Beside the many opportunities for learning together within the class context, our co-curricular activities give plenty of chances for our pupils to engage in team sports. Our Inter-Disciplinary Project Work is a group project to be completed in 30 weeks, and engages the pupils in discovering for themselves how to work together as a team, with teammates who may not necessarily be someone they are close to.
