Lego Mindstorms lab at Nanxiang Campus

ONE of the most exciting new developments at the Nanxiang Campus is the installation of the new Lego Mindstorms robotics lab.

The Lego Mindstorms NXT Software is powered by NI LabVIEW, an intuitive graphical programing software used by scientists and engineers worldwide to design, control and test consumer products and systems such as MP3 and DVD players, cell phones, and vehicle air bag safety systems. Applications include helping to control the NASA Mars Pathfinder exploration to testing the Microsoft Xbox.

Allowing our students to design, build, program and test a real robot and use it to meet challenges set by the teacher has a huge number of benefits for our students.

Not only do they get to see their ideas in a tangible form but they also have the elements of problem solving and clearly defined goals for them to work to and see real results.

Of course the real intention here is not only to allow the students to have fun while learning design and programing skills. "The real development that we are interested in as a school is the development of our students," says BISS Principal Michael Embley.

The Mindstorms system encourages students to exercise their minds and shows them that apparently complex challenges can be broken down into smaller more manageable pieces.

This in turn develops self-confidence and self-belief. The skills are then directly transferable to other aspects of our curriculum, including but not limited to mathematics and science.

Having our own dedicated laboratory and testing space on-site gives us a real advantage in being able to use this system flexibly.

One aspect of the addition of the Mindstorms lab that might not be readily apparent is the development of social and team working skills. It is very rare that any one student has all the answers and all the knowledge to solve the challenge given by the teacher.

Academic studies

A group of students must therefore work together on the project to achieve success. This is a vital real-world skill that can be transferred into all aspects of life but is essential in the modern workplace.

There are many academic studies showing the benefits of the Mindstorms system used in schools and BISS Nanxiang recognized that as an educational leader in Shanghai we must be at the front of worldwide developments and give our students the very best opportunities that we can.

Another exciting development coming for the future is the First Lego League competition.

This is a worldwide contest for schools and other student organizations to participate in a fun and exciting contest focused around the Lego Robotics systems. It's not all about the technology either. The students are assessed on their skills in presenting technical information about their designs and the teams' support and cheering squad!

The Mindstorms lab at BISS Nanxiang is our newest crown jewel. We are so proud to have all this equipment and technology on-site for our students to use, and to see how well they achieve and enjoy using the technology is greatly satisfying for us as educators trying to prepare our students for the world outside of education.
