Shanghai Rego moving onwards and upwards
SHANGHAI Rego International School is now a well-established school with a fast-growing reputation for excellence.
The school has recently been visited by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization as part of its authorization visit and is now awaiting formal recognition of its IB status later next month. The school has been reorganized in the last year or so, with a new primary school building and a redesigned secondary school building.
Rego's new principal, Richard Naylor, has been in Shanghai since August and is overseeing the next phase of the school's development. The school's new playing fields are due to open shortly, and a new gym will be completed later this year.
The capacity of Rego with such modern outstanding facilities places it as a school offering so much both in terms of academic excellence and rigor, and in terms of being a family and community of staff, students and parents.
SRIS is without a doubt one of the friendliest schools in Shanghai. Just last weekend SWIM 24 took place (read more in the Team Spirit piece). Along with a Pyjama Day at the primary school, Swim 24 raised money to help young, underprivileged children at a school in Cambodia. More than 30 primary and secondary pupils combined their efforts to swim more than 250 kilometers between 3pm on Friday and 3pm Saturday.
Rego is one of the premier swimming and rugby schools in Shanghai, and with the fantastic development of its native-speaking and foreign-language program, it would be right to state that it is a leading light in international school developments in Shanghai. Rego's innovative approach to curriculum development means it currently offers six languages programs to native speakers of English, Mandarin, Dutch, French, German and Spanish.
The staff at Rego are also quite unique - the large majority being UK teachers, but staff have also been recruited from South Africa, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Spain. The international flavor of the staffing, far outweighed by the nations represented by the children of the school, is one of the special features of any international school, but the focus of Rego has been very much one of internationalism.
We do not adhere to "we are many nations therefore we are international" but instead place positive emphasis on the different nationalities and cultures in the school so as to raise awareness of our true multiculturalism. The school works hard to make sure all national groups within the school are welcomed, valued, appreciated, and have the opportunity for expression and a voice within the school community.
The caring side of the school also comes across strongly in its participation in the Giving Tree project organized through the Shanghai Community Center.
A large portion of students and staff were involved in it, culminating in a visit to a local orphanage just before the Christmas break. Students throughout the school are encouraged to think of others above themselves and not just to think about issues, but to act for the good of the communities around them.
The development of the IB ethos at Rego and the CAS program which has already been planned and developed, will help the school be a positive focus for multilateral involvement in the community.
The invaluable parts of the school to parents - a varied curriculum (based on the English National Curriculum, IGCSEs & IB hopefully from September 2009), academic standards, small class sizes, experienced and talented staff and pastoral care - are the foundations of Rego.
The proof of the pudding (or dumpling maybe) is in the eating. The pupils, while not meant to be eaten, will give you a good taste of what Rego is like. Visitors regularly state that they find the Rego students among the friendliest and most helpful that they have met - Rego welcomes you to view the school, and to talk with the Admissions Office of the school regarding any enquiries.
In the meantime, Rego is busy getting ready for Chinese New Year and has a big celebration this Saturday. For those of us new to China, this will surely be a wonderful experience and exchange.
Happy New Year!
