A community comes together at SCIS
DURING the 10 years I’ve been at SCIS, I’ve watched teachers and students come and go. I’ve watched the school buildings rise, and watched this class grow in both size and diversity. And after all those years, I stand here today, truly honored to speak to you as a class historian.
As we came into this school, whether it be in kindergarten or the beginning of this year, we didn’t know what lied ahead of us. We had no idea what was coming. We didn’t know that teachers would give us so much work. We didn’t know that IB was going to be this tough, or that completing the extended essay would take way more than the recommended 40 hours. But even though we had a lot to learn, what we did know from the start was that our class would grow up and mature together as a community. As a kid, I used to take this sense of community for granted; but over the past year I’ve come to realize that the sense of belonging that our class radiates is truly unique. And as we stand here today, united and proud to be graduating, I know that every one of you will never forget the experiences we’ve had together.
It takes teamwork
I’m telling you, our class is like a burger. The teachers are the lettuce and tomatoes — the vegetables that we need to balance out our beefiness and provide us with that extra juicy knowledge. The cheese — that’s our families and friends in the crowd — melted around us, loving and supporting us from the start. And of course Mr Hunt and Ms Koenig are the buns, for being on the outside, making sure that we all stay in place. And we? We are the meat — grilled to perfection by our time here at SCIS. Most would say that we are the best part of the meal, but here’s the thing: we couldn’t have become a burger without the vegetables, the cheese, and the buns.
So, on behalf of this class, I think it’s only proper that we say thank you to all of the people who have supported us throughout our high school career. First, of all, the teachers — thank you so much for your patience, dedication and motivation for us to succeed both in and out of class. You have given us inspiration and purpose, allowing us to develop our individuality as we strive for success. And our parents — not only are you our providers, but also our role models. The countless opportunities you have provided us will stay with us forever as we venture out into the world.
